Mr. Jones' sudden death in 1990 was a loss to Fond du Lac and a loss to the UW Fond du Lac campus community. Bernie came to Fond du Lac from Illinois and worked in the private sector and built a parallel career and love of officiating basketball. Community involvement, particularly with youth, was a part of his commitment to the quality of life. At the age of 38, with the support of his family, Bernie enrolled at the UW Center - Fond du Lac where he earned an Associate of Science Degree. While at UW Fond du Lac, Bernie not only excelled in academics but also competed as a member of the UW Fond du Lac basketball team. After his graduation from UW Oshkosh (where he also competed on the intercollegiate golf team) with his degree in Business Administration, Bernie joined the staff of UW Fond du Lac as Business Manager and Golf Coach. The discipline required to finish college while raising a family and working resulted in a unique sensitivity to the needs of students and faculty with whom he came in contact. Bernie’s untimely death was a tragic loss to his family and UW Fond du Lac as well as to the community. Bernie Jones, the husband, father, coach, student, athlete, and businessman will be remembered for his impact on the community; one which transcended any definitive function or age.
